WordPress Blogs Getting hacked!

Several of my blogs are getting hacked.  I’m not alone, this appears to be affecting millions of wordpress blogs.  It’s inserting redirect scripts on all my index*.* files.  This is also affecting all my galleries that use “index” in the file name.  I’ve had to go in and fix about 12 blogs and hundreds of files yesterday.  Basically I have to download wordpress and upload it to overwrite all the files.  This has worked on all but one of my blogs, which I’m still trying to get back up.

Here are some links that describe what’s happening.  Although the particular hack that is affecting me is not exactly as described in these articles, it’s pretty close.  I’m sure we’re going to see several variations of this hack spreading out until the hosting companies figure out how to stop this.

This is affecting my blogs on hostgator and occ.  Webair sent me an email notifying me of suspicious activity and changed my ftp password.  So far those sites are okay.

Besides being a pain in the ass, this could potentially put my sites on a blacklist as a malicious site if left unchecked! People are reporting their own hosting company shutting down their entire accounts.  So visit your sites regularly and make sure they haven’t been hacked.

I installed avast free antivirus on my computer which luckily blocked this script before infecting my computer, which is what brought this to my attention when I was trying to login to one of my blogs.

So install avast (or other credible antivirus program) right away.  This hack as been identified as dangerous – allowing the hacker to gain access to your computer.

  1. I have a similar problem with my TGP galleries with HostGator. They informed me last week that there was a DDoS attack on my website and had to temporarly shut down the site. I don’t quite understand the “justs” of a DDoS attack, but it could be the same problem you are having with the blogs. After about a week I contacted them again and they thought the attacks had subsided and turned on my site again. Now I noticed today that my site is not working still so they must have shut it down again! Crap. I don’t know what the problem is and they tell me Tech is working on it, but in the meantime all my galleries I’ve done for the past 8 months or so are not working. FreeOnes has already notified me that they are removing my galleries because of the fact that the site is not working….All that traffic is lost and I don’t know why or whats happening.

  2. Shit! That sucks to no end. You should open up a new hosting account (I recommend OCC) and move all your domains and galleries there asap.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago on my mainstream business where my sites got shut down. Fortunately, I had more than one hosting account and was able to move everything same day.

This time around I didn’t have to do this since I was able to fix all of my sites myself before I got dinged by the hosting company and all the places I submit too. However, if the hosting company had shut my sites down, I would have had to move them. It’s just a simple matter of updating the nameservers to the new host and ftp all the galleries.

Hence, to this day, I maintain all my stuff on my computer and several hosting accounts. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it.
